At Nithya Sai Charitable Trust, we firmly believe that empowering women is not just about financial independence — it’s about ensuring their health, dignity, and future. In regions like Metpally, Korutla, and Jagityal, hundreds of women spend long hours rolling bidis as their primary source of income. Though this work sustains their families, it silently damages their health and limits their opportunities for growth.
Bidi-making involves constant exposure to tobacco dust, which severely affects the lungs, skin, and overall respiratory system. Many women, often unaware of the long-term risks, develop chronic illnesses such as asthma, bronchitis, tuberculosis, and even early signs of lung disease.
Prolonged contact with tobacco also leads to headaches, nausea, and skin irritation, making their everyday struggle even more painful. Most of these women work from small, poorly ventilated rooms, often sitting for long hours in unhealthy postures — causing back pain, fatigue, and weakness. Despite their hard work, the income they earn is meager and unstable, leaving them trapped in a cycle of poverty and ill health.
Recognizing this harsh reality, the Nithya Sai Charitable Trust is stepping forward to create change. The Trust plans to launch the “Naari Shakti” initiative, a mission-driven program that will help these women move away from hazardous bidi-making toward healthier, skill-based livelihoods.
By offering training in making eco-friendly agarbattis, handmade soaps, face washes, and turmeric-based products, the Trust aims to ensure that women can earn a sustainable income without risking their health. This initiative will also include health awareness programs, encouraging women to prioritize self-care, regular checkups, and hygiene.
Through “Naari Shakti,” the Trust envisions a future where women in these regions no longer sacrifice their health for survival but instead thrive in safe, productive, and dignified occupations — becoming the true pillars of empowered communities.
